Heres a video of Randy Pausch on his “Last Lecture” at Carnegie-Mellon University titled the How to Achieve  you Childhood Dreams!

I am really fascinated about the esthusiasm of the author of the Last Lecture that was delivered at Carnegie-Mellon University and was made into book. I found one at Wal-Mart today and all the things he was saying on his Last Lecture was explained in detail in his book.

This book is amazing, why? beacause the author Randy Pausch is going to die in days if not in months or few years secondary to Pancreatic Cancer… and he is still enthusiastic and optimistic about everything including his life, family, friends, and work. Just imagine he is about to die and that he is still able to direct his life by buying a house, write a book, and is not sad about his state.

I really admire this person with how he sees life, and how he achieved successes.

As a nurse of these transplantable patients for heart and lung, I see them most of the time suffering from pain, shortness of breath, and most of the time they are in a medicine that cannot be turned off, or a machine that takes over the pumping ability of the heart(LVAD)… Its sad to see them suffering. I hope they get over when they get transplanted.

Can you do that? well you must be exceptional. Drinking alcoholic drinks without getting drunk is a skill sometimes, but sometimes its your tolerance to alcohol that makes you stay alert and thats makes you an alcoholic.

But you can cheat, do you know that? yes you can cheat. I know you are asking by now: HOW?! to know just keep on reading.

So you are really interested. Ok I give up.

I was reading a Nuts-O label which contains cashew on it. Written on its label are these words:

 ”It’s a Downer”

”For every cocktail, there’s a hangover-a heavy head, low metabolism, general drowsiness. Well don’t worry, just munch a handful of cashew nuts along with a drink. Cashewnuts can effectively thwart the blues after ball. besides, it protects your liver cells from alcohol assault - no fear of cirrhosis even when the moonshine goes over board.”

” So carry on!”

But what if theres no cashew? I thinkyour best substitute is “Peanuts”. That makes sense since in most bars they serve you with peanuts as side.

and now that you have the idea, time for execution, buy alcohol and don’t get drunk! Remember DUI is expensive than the alcohol plus the risks.

POlar carePolar Care: a cold therapy device used as a cooling system to reduce swelling and decrease pain to patients who had just undergone surgery.

This device can be use easily. A polar care has a bucket full of ice and water anf a hose that has a motor on the other end to suck and circulate fluid to the cooling pad, where the pad is applied to body of the patient.

Setup is pretty simple and easy to use. I have seen lots of patients who use it after surgery and it helped them alot in terms of pain management and decreasig swelling.

The principle behind its use to patients is that by application of cold matter decreases in size so as the blood vessels which in turn decreases bleeding and in inflammation it decreases swelling, as well decrease pain perception since cold can divert attention from sensation of pain as well cold decreases release of chemical mediators for pain, but prolonged treatment of cold also poise danger to patients like hypothermia, ischemia, and pain.

Polar Care is helpful and efficient but if you don’t have it you can use the traditional Ice Pack and that will do.

Couple of days ago one of my I recieved an email asking where she can get the download for Micromedex, well that made me think, and thought it can only be downloaded by Medical Professionals who’s company has affiliation with Thomson.

I was wrong. when I went to their website I found out that a medical student(any field) can download Micromedex. Well I dont know with the general public, anyway maybe they can download it but for what use to them? reference of course but of little use. I am thinking general can override micromedex registration by placing there that they are still students(but do it! since thats not good!)

Anyway heres the link to Micromedex Download site and all you have to do is register and there you go medical things in your palm. don’t forget your registration, because whenever you sync your device you might need the password and username in updating your Micromedx, Since it updates whenever you sync you device..

So there it is you are now ready to use one of the limousine of medical PDA Software.

Manikin Face Shield by Laerdal

Laerdal Manikin FAce ShieldsI went to CPR Class last month and I found this product great for CPR practice and use. Its called Manikin Face Shield made by Laerdal. It is a piece of plastic roll and u can tear it like rolled tissue paper where at the center of it you can find a barrier where you can blow in during CPR. All you have to do is place the face shield over a CPR manikin head with barrier on top of the manikin’s mouth for Mouth to mouth or nose respiration/ventilation(shown on picture) and after use discard the shield. and thats it!

Manikin FAce Shield useThe advantages for this is that it prevents you from kissing the mouth of the monilkin and prevents you from contacting microorganism from previous persons who used the manikin before.

Pictures at the left shows you on how to use the product. So CPR is now safe.

PICC (pheripherally Inserted Catheter) usally inserted for long term use especially if the patient will go home with IV medicine, its the same with TLC (Triple Lumen Catheter) where patients can take it home but its so seldom for patients to go home with it. PICC line can be inserted by IV Nurses while TLC can only be inserted by MD’s sometimes under flouroscopy(with aid of xray monitor) While most IV nurses insert PICC with the use of ultrasound. Some MD’s insert TLC by blind shot, that MD must be good! The advantage about these lines is that it can help medical professionals especially nurses in drawing blood and giving medications without problem.

Thanks to these lines this makes the life of nurses too, especially if the patient is obese, edematous, and hard stick. Just imagine yourself being stuck everyhour for blood draws and IV restarts? thats tough and hard work. So its better to have those lines on patients.

Both lines are easy to manage but TLC is more dangerous and PICC is lesser  but could be dangerous too. CAre for these lines shoudl be meticulouse too you should clean them before using and load it with heparin to prevent from quiting.
