My thoughts on WalMart vs Shoemart in Philippine market condition.

Well WalMart and ShoeMart started on the concept of retail and discount sales. Both excelled well. But lets see how WalMart would fare in the Philippines.

I think Walmart will have a hard time competing with SM primarily SM already have the edge over WM in the Phiippines. What if they we take away that premise. I think with the store condition of Walmart it will still be hard for WM to survive. Unless WM will really do the bargain of bargain sale in the Philippines which I presume they don’t have the capability to do that in an uncharted sea of WM.

But if WalMart will merge with one of the discount stores in the Philippines I think WM will have some edge. Will need more million dollar investment to topple the now number one discount store in the Philippines, SM.

But what if SM will go to US? I think SM will have hard time surviving also primarily because the buying capacity of Philippine Peso over Dollar is low which it will be hard for SM to do business in US.

BUt I don’t know, about this what if of mine… We’ll its just  my thoughts.

I know this company very much. My estimate this company holds at least 70% of telephone and celphone subscribers (SMART) in the Philippines. They provide data and internet services, they have ventures in Philippines first data satellite and invested lots of money over undersea fiberoptic cable from US to Philippines and Asia. PLDT is a giant and I think a utility with big margin of profit. Only Philippine company listed on NYSE.

Recently with the demand for outsourced call centers. PLDT formed a company to cater it.

They also own the most franchised internet cafe in the Philippines.

If  I have some more money in my portfolio I will gladly invest some fortune in this company. maybe in weeks I will do it.

Jollibee Foods a Philippine company listed at Pink Sheets  market in the US as JBFCF.PK and publicly traded in the Philippine stock market. This company has been performing very well since its conception like McDonalds, and it toppled McDonalds in sales for many years now. It has been bullish too  as a stock since I bought this last year though it has stayed flat for couple of months now.

Maybe the reason why this company has been flat for couple of months is that it has been using its funds in establishing new markets in China and India, as well testig new market in the Philippine restaurant industry(the karenderia style). Years ago it bought it bought one of the restaurant chain in China as well in Singapore and India. According to reports Jollibee is expanding its operations here in the US especially their cakes and pastry segment which is the Red Ribbon(one of my favorite cakes.) and Jollibee too is planning to invest more in placing couple more Jollibee restaurants here in US.

So far so good. I think I will keep on buying this stock. For me to get a Jollibee franchise.

Here in the US al I know is that you have to take an exam and pass it and get business permit for it. I don’t know how much the capitalization is but i’m pretty sure its expensive.

Anyway in the Philippines all you need is a capitalization of maybe more than Php100,100.00, some schematic diagram of your pawnshop loaction and pawnshop shop and some attorneys fee, bank guarantees, pawn ticket sample and maybe transaction fees at Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. I forgot some of the requirements  but I think those are just basic things you need to do inorder to set up the business.

And thats it youre there, ready to do business…. I think the hard part of it is the transaction with BSP anyway they have a stipulation where you can start your pawnshop business while you are still following up the approval for the license.

When you passed one year at least you can say you are already earning real money.
